Final Summit Report
The Provisioning Fisheries Research Team convened 35 fisheries managers, researchers, and practitioners for a four-day summit event in Windsor, Ontario, from September 30th to October 2nd, 2024. The objective of the summit was two-fold: (1) to examine the unique role of provisioning fisheries in the Great Lakes and to identify overlaps with recreational, subsistence, and commercial fisheries, and (2) to generate a research agenda to guide future research and identify current knowledge gaps.
The report below summarizes participant discussions during the event. Five key themes were identified and are discussed in further detail in the report: (1) climate change, (2) health risks, (3) regulatory shortfalls, (4) limited infrastructure, and (5) lack of representation. Opportunities to better support provisioning fisheries, as well as goals for the next five years, were also identified by summit participants.
