Do you fish on shores in the Great Lakes?
Studying the importance of shore fishing
Shore fishing is important for people in many ways including for: food, leisure, relaxation, community, income, and more. Very little research has been dedicated to better understanding the importance of shore fishing in the Great Lakes, so we are setting out to gather information that may support the needs and preferences of shore anglers.
We believe there are benefits of recreational fisheries that go beyond leisure and fun. There are services that these fisheries provide (hence we call them provisioning fisheries) that include food, nutrition, economic, socio-cultural, sense of identity and place, mental health and wellbeing.
We believe that 'provisioning fisheries' are currently unrepresented in fisheries assessment, governance, and management in the Great Lakes. Therefore, our project focuses on better understanding how important fishing is to people's food security, livelihood, culture, and identity.
